Build Your Personal Support Team

One of the best ways to make your financial goals happen is to set up the right support team—both personal and professional. We’re generally not very good at getting support around our money goals. People tend to be super secretive when it comes to anything related to personal finances. Most people reveal the details of their financial life only to a very select group of people, if at all. But you really don’t have to fly solo to meet your Prosperity Picture goals. It can be so much more difficult to reach your goals if you don’t get support, encouragement, and input from others. It’s similar to creating a fitness goal and deciding to work out with a friend, take a group class, or hire a personal trainer. Having supportive people around you can help you reach your goals much more efficiently. If you’re a bit uneasy about this, remember you don’t need to share all the gory details and specific numbers to have your friends and family support you. Letting them know your general goals can be just fine, and you can still benefit from their encouragement and insight.

Having said this, we caution you to be careful who you choose to be on your team. Getting the right type of help from the right people is also crucial. Ever have a goal you were really excited about, only to have it shot down by someone? This someone might even be a person who loves and cares about you. Sometimes our goals are not the same or may conflict with our loved ones’ goals. Silvia knows this firsthand. Her parents worked very hard to get her through college and medical school and were incredibly proud of their daughter when she became an ER doctor. Silvia had a secure job at a local hospital and made very good money. There was only one problem. She hated her work. Silvia was stressed, miserable, and searching for ways to live her passion—which was theater. She loved acting, writing, and directing. She searched desperately for ways to incorporate this into her life. Any time she broached this subject with her parents, she was met with confusion and anger. How could their brilliant daughter think of doing anything but being a respected physician? Silvia realized that, as close as she felt to her parents, they were not the people she needed to support her for this goal. She found a trusted theater friend as well as a good financial advisor to help her figure out how to practice medicine less and do more theater work. Fast-forward five years—Silvia is now working part-time in a clinic and running a small theater company. No, she’s not making as much money as before, but she loves her life. Be discriminating when you choose the team to help you along the way. This safety tip could apply to friends, professional advisors, coaches, or even your spouse or partner.
